Amelia joined Abel + Imray in 2020, and is based in our London office.

Her undergraduate degree specialised in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and cell biology, and included a final-year dissertation on the genetic control of epithelial-mesenchymal transitions in the Drosophila embryo. She then spent several years as a research assistant at the University of Melbourne, where she investigated the use of fluorescent nanodiamonds as a cell fate tracker.

After her MPhil year at Cambridge, which involved several laboratory placements focusing on a variety of experimental systems, Amelia completed a PhD studying the effect of brain tissue stiffness on neuronal growth.  This used atomic force microscopy and other techniques from materials science to measure the physical properties of the embryonic brain. Both her PhD and subsequent postdoctoral work resulted in publications in journals including Nature Neuroscience, eLife, and Nature.

Before joining Abel + Imray, Amelia worked in a university technology transfer office, helping researchers to commercialise their inventions in areas such as agri-tech and healthcare.  She also spent time as a freelance writer for a scientific journal, where she produced plain-language summaries of biological research papers.
