Rhys entered the profession in 2003 and is based in the Cardiff Office. He is one of our joint Managing Partners and works across a wide range of technical subject matter, from complex physics to mechanical engineering.

Particular subjects in which Rhys is experienced include aerospace, offshore engineering, structural engineering, battery management technology, consumer electronics, medical imaging and diagnostics, and defence-related technologies. In addition to working with large multinational companies, Rhys works with many small and medium sized businesses and enjoys helping clients improve their understanding of intellectual property and how it may fit in with their business development.

Rhys has also been involved in a number of transfers of large, worldwide, IP portfolios. This has included liaising with attorneys across multiple-jurisdictions to ensure that all of the local requirements are met, and the rights are successfully transferred. In addition to this, Rhys has worked on asset purchases of companies in administration, and has experience of the particular challenges posed by such scenarios.

"The team at Abel + Imray have a great deal of understanding of our requirements and how to put these into a patent application. They make the process simple and have successfully achieved our first patent and are in the process of dealing with a number of other applications."

Jon Lewis, Chairman, Direct Healthcare Services Limited

Rhys is responsible for a large UK patent portfolio for a Chinese power tool manufacturer.  On a recent visit to China, he spent time visiting various local attorneys and lectured on UK and European patent and design law.

For several years, Rhys has run a patent drafting workshop at the Intellectual Property Office, helping new entrants to the profession develop their patent drafting skills.
