As a Chartered and European Patent Attorney and European Patent Litigator, Shaun is able to represent clients in matters before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

M.Eng. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Bath

Scientific Background
During his studies, Shaun took particular interest in topics including digital system design using hardware description languages, high-frequency circuit design, and telecommunications. Shaun also worked on a number of projects, including the design of a Rotman lens beamformer and development of an FPGA-based Zilog Z80 emulator.

Before joining Abel + Imray, Shaun worked as an electronics design engineer at a multinational defence company. In this role he first designed actuation and power electronics and later developed firmware for communications links.

Experience
Shaun joined Abel + Imray in 2017 and is based in the Bath office. Shaun's work at Abel + Imray has included drafting and prosecuting patent applications for technologies spanning a range of sectors, for clients ranging from SMEs to multinational companies.

Defence and Security
Having worked in the Defence industry, Shaun has an understanding of the specific challenges and requirements of the defence sector. During his time at Abel + Imray, Shaun has drafted and prosecuted patent applications for a wide range of defence and security related inventions.

Software and Machine Learning
Shaun specialises in software inventions and has particular experience in advising on the patentability of computer program and business method inventions, including whether they may be excluded from patentability in the UK and Europe. Shaun has experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to fields including virtual and augmented reality, financial technology, and artificial intelligence / machine learning.

Electronic Circuit Design
Shaun is also experienced in drafting and prosecuting patent applications for electronic circuit designs, including power converters, analogue filters and amplifiers, and sensor technology.

Telecommunications
Shaun has worked extensively on patent applications for telecommunications technologies. His work in this field includes technologies ranging from network switches to satellite communications for helicopters.

Outside of work, Shaun enjoys travelling the world, and has recently completed a six-month trip around Central and South America.
