Tom joined Abel + Imray in 2001 and is based in the London Office. He is qualified as a Patent Attorney Litigator with Higher Court rights, having obtained a Certificate in Intellectual Property Litigation and Advocacy from Nottingham Trent University. He also sits on the CIPA Patents Committee.
Tom handles a variety of computing, electronic and mechanical subject-matter, with particular technical expertise in software, the internet and mathematical applications such as probabilistic/statistical methods, security and encryption. He advises on European and UK practice relating to the patentability of computer-implemented inventions, business methods and related fields of excluded subject matter, and has experience of the requirements of other jurisdictions. He also has an interest in open source licencing.
Tom has extensive experience of the patenting process before the European and UK patent offices, and has obtained patents in many other jurisdictions including the USA. He provides post-grant infringement and validity opinions, and has been involved in several freedom-to-operate investigations. He also has considerable experience of registered designs, frequently filing European Community registered design applications, as well as having filed many UK, International (Hague Agreement) and overseas design applications.
